it comes out pretty far (18 ") from our fireplace so there isn't too hot and when small arms are not come close to touching the door to our stove wood insert. seems to be covered with some kind of heat-resistant plastic so even at higher temperature of our fireplace (500 degrees) the Rails get quite warm but not too hot and it seems that it will never be hot enough to cause a burn. It measures close enough to the design of the hearth, which was a challenge because its one side surrounded by a large window and a sliding door from other. the quality is fine. solid plastic metal. I love how they designed the attachment to be mobile and expandable to allow room for Baseboard. There are some concerns 1) ports must be removed individually, you cant ' fold accordian style

I ordered one of these gates to fit a large aperture (68 ") between the foyer and the dining room. before ordering this gate I was using the ugly, plastic garden fencing to keep my dogs just outside the living area. This gate looks fantastic. It was easy to put the pieces together. is strong and I was so glad I ordered 3 more to lock the dogs from other areas of the House. It is very easy to step over, too. probably wouldn't work for large dogs or hyper little dogs jumping
